Daniel’s Secret

Daniel

Text by Jaslyn Wong

I have always marvelled at the perfection of Daniel…

Without blemish? Check. Good-looking? Check. Gifted in all wisdom? Check. Possessing knowledge? Check. (Daniel 1:4) Ability to interpret dreams? Check. Excellent spirit? Check. (Daniel 5:12) Survived a fiery furnace? (Daniel 3:19) Check. Survived the lions’ den? Check. (Daniel 6:16)

This guy had everything working for him! How did he have such great faith in the Lord? What made him so bold? I wonder what his secret was?

And today, I finally saw the answer to my questions. During a Caregroup session, my Caregroup leader, Cheryl, shared the secret behind Daniel’s success…it can be found in Daniel 6:10.

“…And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.

Wow. It wasn’t about the kneeling, it wasn’t about fixing a prayer routine…it was about the relationship Daniel had with God. Daniel was special because he had a relationship with God! And through the quiet time he spent in his upper room, he probably fed on God’s goodness and love towards him. He understood the heart of God, and therefore when adversity rose against him, he could easily trust in the Lord.

And when I saw that Daniel “gave thanks” and “made supplication” (Daniel 6:11), it reminded me of this verse, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) No wonder he had such great faith! It was because the peace of God guarded his heart as he spent time giving thanks and making supplication to the Lord!

I was really blown away by the simplicity of the secret behind Daniel’s great faith! How about you? :)
