‘FLOW’ was the word that stayed with me after last Saturday’s GenRev service, which continued Pastor Benjamin’s series on love and relationships. It’s a word I can now use to begin my response to the many young adults today who say, “I am too busy to have a relationship”, “I’m happy with my life now, I don’t want to give up my current lifestyle for him/her.”, “I don’t want to change for anyone”, or “No time, too troublesome”.
Do these statements sound familiar to you? Ever heard your friends or even yourself saying these? To be honest, these thoughts have come across my mind before and harbouring such thoughts threatened to prevent my heart from listening to the sermon on Saturday.
However, right at the beginning of the sermon, when I heard Pastor Benjamin say “God will provide a life partner that will FLOW with you and complement you”, it was as if I could feel the revelation literally dropping from head to heart. What he said changed my perspective of dating radically in an instant! It may sound cliché to say this, but a relationship is akin to two pieces of a puzzle being fitting each other perfectly. Both pieces do not have to change its shape to fit the other; instead, they COMPLEMENT each other.
Of course there will be some adjustments when two people come together and decide to have a relationship, but there is no need to go to the extreme of changing themselves, their personalities, or giving up their lifestyles and careers! For two individuals to be able to flow together, Pastor Benjamin also gave practical advice that stressed the importance of not being unequally yoked, character and compatibility.
Apart from exceptions, God has never designed man to be alone (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). So, trust God to provide a life partner who will love you for who you are, who you can share your dreams with, lift you up when you are down and walk a wonderful, awesome and Jesus-centred journey with you. =) God knows us better than ourselves and knows the right life partner for us! He is the perfect matchmaker!
