What does Christmas carolling mean to you? What is the significance of travelling in a group, going house to house and sing Christmas songs? I was privileged to find out and experience it myself last Saturday when combined GenRev CGs went Christmas carolling. That evening, we went to Kai Zhen’s and Mark’s house dressed in red and green, toting guitars and a tambourine, each and every one of us ready to sing!
As our humble little band started playing, with our voices piping in together with the music, it all made sense when I saw the smiles and joy on everyone’s faces! The guitarists faithfully played what they had practised, the choir lifted their voices in tune, while the audience sang and clapped along! This showed me that Jesus must have touched each and every caroller’s life in one way or another; so much so that they want to share with others this special joy given to them by Jesus, spreading Christmas cheer and good tidings by singing to the world.
As the carollers were singing, I could see their thankfulness to Jesus for what He has done for us in our life. The carolling wasn’t just all fun and entertainment and singing songs. I believe the audience were touched by Jesus too, not by our carolling but through our carolling. When we praise Him, magnify His finished work and give thanks for His promises and blessings, Jesus is there
We filled their houses with songs like the familiar ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’, the cheerful ‘Mary’s Boy Child’, the upbeat ‘Feliz Navidad’ (‘Merry Christmas’ in Spanish) and the perennial favourite, ‘We Were the Reason’.
When the first few notes of ‘We Were the Reason’ was played, something moved in my heart and I believe, in many others as well. It reminded me of the Father’s unfathomable love for us. He sacrificed His one and only begotten son so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. We are the reason why Jesus died on the cross and conquered death for us. Therefore, Jesus is the true reason why we celebrate Christmas.
He is the reason why we have favour and right standing with God.
He is the reason why we can wake up every morning with strength and hope.
He is the reason of our skip in our step.
He is the reason why we are truly blessed, not by the world standards, but by God’s standards.
He is the reason that our sadness is exchanged with tears of joy.
He is the reason why we receive restoration and much more.
He is the reason why God’s grace lifts us up every time we fall.
He is the reason of our love, peace and joy.
Jesus is, the true reason of Christmas.
So while celebrating with our beloved family and friends, let’s remember Jesus and the Father’s amazing love for us.
